I, Walter is the first in a series of books in a saga which will span continents and time to arrive in present day North America. Each in the series will be connected, though that connection may not be obvious for several more books. It's almost like looking at a menorah (sic). Many lines, seemingly individual, connect to center at different points.
About the Author
Mike Hartner was born in Miami in 1965. He's traveled much of the continental United States. He has several years post secondary education, and experience teaching and tutoring young adults. Hartner has owned and run a computer firm for more than twenty-five years. He now lives in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, with his wife and child. They share the neighborhood and their son with his maternal grandparents.

CAPTIVATING

Downloading a book when there is such a brief description, no prior reviewers and an unknown author could be risky. I, Walter, is full of risks and great rewards. The author introduces you to a 67 year old Walter Crofter as he begins to pen his life's story. The reader is instantly charmed and captivated.
This is an action filled story that is told with such clarity that the reader can nearly smell the streets of Elizabethan England: hear the noisy seaport sounds and feel the salty wet winds. The story takes you across oceans and around continents and is full of surprises - some that will elicit tears and others that will churn your stomach and raise bile in your throat. Nothing is predictable. The supporting characters simmer your suspicions and you never truly know who to trust. It is a story that feeds your fears while tugging your heart-strings. Your heart will feel the weight of Maria's hand as she rests it upon Walter's shoulder or mops his fevered brow.
With all the turmoil and truama there is an equal amount of joy. Walter's story is quite a journey and it will linger with you long after the words have gone.

Is it just plain luck, or talent?

Walter Crofter was born to a working class family in England. His father always wanted to be part of the social elite, especially tying himself to the coat tales of Sir Walter Raleigh. But that was not to be. Raleigh fell out of favor and the Crofter family lived on the brink of severe poverty. Their eldest son, Gilbert, ran off and fell into a life of crime. Their younger son, Walter, ran away but life's circumstances would lead him into a life of excitement, money, and love.
Walter is pulled off the docks in Portsmouth by a man named Bart. Bart is the first officer on a trade ship and we aren't sure what he sees in the young Crofter, but he takes him under his wing and teaches him all about sailing a ship. But what he can't teach is already a part of Crofter's character. Crofter is kind, generous, loyal, patriotic, courageous and smart.
Through a series of circumstances the young Crofter burrows his way deep into the heart of Bart. Not only that he then saves Bart's life on three different occasions. What he doesn't know is that Bart is the relative of the King of England and an emissary for the King.
As part of this historical novel we see how the small things in life can have a huge impact on a person's bearing. On a trip to the America's the young Crofter see's a new trade with a new product called, sugar. He convinces Bart and another Ship's captain to bring a load of sugar to England. This begins a new trade that makes Crofter wealthy. Later on a different trip to Africa and the Indian ocean he comes across another new find, tobacco. He starts a trade in tobacco that no one else thinks will be profitable to find out that it pays off even better than sugar.
But all the while there are the sea battles with pirates, the land battles with criminals and the general love affair of young Crofter and Maria whom he has rescued from a Pirates Ship where she was held captive.
I don't want to spoil the book, so I'm going to stop right here. Bottom line, Crofter goes from Poverty to riches. Is it because of the luck of the draw or his skill, talent and intelligence? You will have to decide. But all in all Mike Hartner gives us an intriguing story that will keep you turning the pages late into the evening. I couldn't put this book down.
Now, I'm left with having to wait until the next in this new series becomes available. So, please Mike, keep writing and write quickly so that we can get the next installment in this series.

You Will Fall In Love

With I Walter Mike Hartner has created one dynamic romance novel, but not just any romance novel. This is a book about what it means to be human. You too will fall in love with Walter, he's charming and likable.
The story is written with such clarity that you will be transported to the the streets of Elizabethton, England. It will feel like you are standing on the streets, hearing the noises and sounds of the carriages and seaports.
A timeless story filled with action, love, lust and greed. There is nothing predictable about this book. It will feed your fear, as well as move your heart. There is a delicate balance between joy, pain trauma and turmoil, just enough to keep you turning the pages. This is a story your mind for days after you have read the last line.
