The FIrst Shannara Novel with Author's Notes Added

I remember when this book first came out in 1977, in trade paperback form, with the quote on the back cover, “For those who have been seeking something to read since they finished ‘The Lord of the Rings,’ here is a wondrous new epic fantasy.” I loved the cover and illustrations by the brothers Hildebrandt, the pair who illustrated Tolkien’s calendars. After buying the book and reading the story, I wasn’t disappointed. I have faithfully read every new book that Terry Brooks has written ever since.
As for this book, from the beginning you know that this was based on Tolkein’s “The Lord of the Rings,” characters, places, plots, and scenes. You can keep a scorecard of the similarities on all four categories and compare notes. In this annotated edition, Brooks admits in Note 120, page 319 of the hardback, that this book was influenced by Tolkein. There are differences. Each character is his own, as well as the places, and the plot and scenes are twisted, and as you progress, there is more originality from Brooks’ pen, so there are differences. If you love fantasy, you will like this book, even if you haven’t read Tolkein.
The storyline in this book is similar. A Dark Lord has arisen once again from the past and is out to dominate the world (The Four Lands, in this case). Should he succeed, all the races will be enslaved in a dark world, equivalent to Hell. There is one talisman that can destroy him, and only one person, Shea Ohmsford, a half-elf, half human, who can use it, being the Sword of Shannara. Shea is innocent of all this, and doesn’t even know, but the Dark Lord Brona (Sauron, in the Lord of the Rings), sets out to destroy Shea (Frodo) to insure his victory, using his Skull Bearers (Black Riders). Allanon (Gandalf) sets out to warn Shea, and both Shea and Flick (Sam Gamgee) sets out to find the fabled sword, later to be accompanied by others (Elves, a dwarf, and two princes) to help. Wars begin, and you can guess the rest. There are surprises, and more than a few dissimilarities from the Tolkein trilogy.
In subsequent books, the author becomes more original in his tales, and expands his four lands and tells of its history, as well as other threatening villains.
This particular book, released on its 35th anniversary, included annotations, notes from the author on different subjects, but mostly his thoughts on this first book. They cover morality, friendship, and enmity between brothers, notes on the basic fundamentals of an epic like what would be taught in a classroom, i.e. how to and not to write an epic and literary sources. For example, Brooks mentions in an episode that Menion Leah’s (Shea’s cousin) feet get tangles by a tree’s roots, the roots being a sort of monster, being inspired from the sirens in Homer’s The Odyssey, so there were other literary sources other than Tolkein’s. In other scenes, Brooks makes references to subsequent novels where those places are revisited, but in a different time.
I feel the annotations are interesting, and I enjoyed reading them along with the book. This book would especially be useful if you want to write fantasy, to see the way it is done, the do’s and don’t’s of writing an epic. I would recommend this book to any Brooks fan, and to any English teacher who teaches fantasy in high school or college, and yes, these courses do exist. The annotations would make great topic for discussion.
