Let's Play Ball!

My children, especially my 6 year old daughter, LOVES the An Elephant and Piggie books. Her school library has a seemingly endless supply of these books and she borrows them constantly. Every week on Library day she brings home two new ones...and we read each book every single night for the entire week! Every story that we've read is LOL funny! I have to admit, that I too love these stories (as does my husband.) This particular book is no exception.
In this story when Piggie asks to throw Gerald's ball, he first wants to make sure she knows the secret of throwing. Piggie is sure she knows the secret "have fun." But, Gerald takes his throwing seriously...fun is not part of the package. It takes skill and lots of practice and one has to work very hard to learn how to throw a ball. LOL Piggie just wants to throw the ball.
When she throws it and it lands behind her, she thinks she's made such an amazing throw, that she threw the ball in a circle, all around the world! LOL Gerald is quick to disabuse her of this mistaken belief, but Piggie doesn't care because SHE HAD FUN!! Gerald decides to make his own bad throw and discovers that it is as much fun as Piggie claimed. This story is not only funny and entertaining, but it also includes a lesson about the importance of relaxing and having fun. This lesson is one of which adults in particular need reminding.
The story is funny, sweet, and engaging. It's well written; the illustrations very simple, yet super expressive. My daughter, who is a first grader can easily read all the Elephant and Piggie books. Because of the simple easy-to-read words used in the stories, I think these books are appropriate for beginning readers...Kindergarteners and Pre-K students.
